Studio Policies for Individual Piano Lessons

My responsibilities

I enjoy teaching students of all ages, learning styles, and levels and strive to provide the best possible music education at the piano for every student. This is accomplished by providing interesting work at the piano in the realms of learning pieces, technique, sight reading, composition, and ear training. Music study is a great way to build discipline, which is a basic building block for success in life. The study of beautiful music is enjoyable, and I hope each of my students will find a joy in music study that will last for their entire life.

Your responsibilities

  • Daily Practice: The discipline of daily practice leads to progress which fuels motivation to continue to practice and progress. Parents are expected to be actively involved in practicing with beginners and young children until they reach an age where they can be more self-directed in their practicing.
  • Attendance: Attend lessons regularly, on time, with all practice and homework completed.

Individual Piano Lesson Schedule

School Year:

Students are scheduled for 34 lessons per year (16 in the fall and 18 in the spring) for the school year. While the school calendar is followed, there are days I plan to teach where schools are off including but not limited to Presidents day, Columbus Day, and some teacher in service days. If your family plans to travel during one of these days, please let me know and we’ll schedule an additional lesson for the last week of May.

There will be semi-monthly group studio sessions available for no cost on Fridays called mini-recitals. These are opportunities for your child to practice playing in front of peers in a supportive environment and I hope you’ll consider attending.  This is also a great opportunity for your child to showcase their skills to visiting friends and relatives.

Recital: Students are expected to attend a minimum of 28 lessons and demonstrate progress through home practice to be invited to the spring recital.

Summer Flex Scheduling

Over the course of June and July, you have eight 30 minute lessons to schedule as you see fit. You can do 30 minute lessons weekly, 1 hour lessons every two weeks, or any combination that you'd like. Instructor availability calendar available here

Parental attendance at lessons

You are welcome in this space. You may sit near the piano or in the waiting area. If you bring other children, it's preferred they are attended in the waiting area. You are invited to ask questions and learn along with your student.

Alternatively, you may drop off and pick up. You are not required to attend lessons.

Rescheduling and Cancellations

Here's the link to reschedule when your student is ill or you have a schedule conflict: https://calendly.com/davispianostudio/oops

Please note: this is not for permanent schedule changes. It can be used the week of the schedule change you need or during the weeks when make-up lessons are available. To permanently change your weekly lesson time, please contact me by phone or text at 512.222.7640.

There are three periods this school year where regularly scheduled lessons will not be given, but make-up lessons can be scheduled. These are

December

  • 12/18/23
  • 12/19/23
  • 12/20/23

January

  • 1/3/24
  • 1/4/24

May

  • 5/20/24
  • 5/21/24
  • 5/22/24

Rescheduled lessons cannot be made-up or rescheduled further. If they are missed, then they are missed. No refund, adjustment, nor credit is available. All make-up lessons are given at the studio. It is your responsibility to reschedule. Texting me that you want to reschedule is not a substitute.

If a lesson is missed without rescheduling, it will not be refunded. Tuition covers my time which is booked for you whether you show up or not. In giving you the opportunity to reschedule, I'm giving you additional time. This is a courtesy.

Tuition Due Date and Late Penalty

Tuition is due monthly and on your selected due date (which is by default the first of the month). After your due date, a late fee of $10 will be applied. Tuition is not reduced for student absences of any kind. Discounts are not given for multiple students in the same family for individual piano lessons.

Deposit:

A $40 deposit is due when you register as a student. It secures your spot in the studio. It cannot be refunded, but is applied to the first month's tuition. Should the student not start lessons with the studio, this deposit is forfeit

Discontinuation of lessons

Students are expected to commit to the full year of piano study, August through May. If you need to discontinue lessons for any reason, please give 30 days notice. The 30 days notice is to provide the student with a well designed send off experience to cap what has been learned and often to provide additional study materials.

Video Surveillance

Video Surveillance is captured at the door of the studio (Nest doorbell camera) and at the piano where lessons are taught (Nest Hub Max).
